Mild and mountainous, Vancouver Island is where Canada and the Pacific connect. Looking comparatively small against the hulking landmass of North America, this is in fact no small island (it's not much smaller than the entirety of Switzerland). Snowy mountain tops and subtropical rainforests, there is a fair share of diversity out here. It's perhaps the only place in the world where you can go skiing, surfing and golfing all in the same day, if that's your thing.

Mountains loom in all directions, including Washington state's coastal range that is most obvious from Victoria's coastline. Though not a sprawling metropolis, Victoria has a surprisingly developed center for an area with 330,000 or so residents. This is partly thanks to a lucrative tourism industry, as well as being the political center of Canada's west coast
