Here is the short take on Detroit: It's an metonym for anything involved with the North American automotive industry- for example, "Report: Detroit to invest in fuel cell vehicles". Even though manufacturing plants have spread to other cities and countries, the big three domestic automakers are all still headquartered in Motown. Detroit has been on a rough stretch in recent decades, with the loss of manufacturing jobs and high unemployment in the inner city. It's clear walking the downtown streets that the city is well passed it's heyday, but not without redeeming qualities. My short time in Detroit is pictographed below.
