Frankfurt is the financial heart of Germany. Rising from the ashes of WWII, under American occupation, Frankfurt rebuilt. It has become Germany's richest and most advanced city: Skyscrapers rise up like nowhere else in Europe; An important transportation hub brings in hundreds of thousands of people; The heads of Germany's and Europe's biggest financial institutions congregate here. It is Germany's second biggest metropolis, bigger still than the capital Berlin. Frankfurt is often described as a city without character; one that is purely business orientated. A world of bankers, corporations and suits. It's also known as a crime capital in Germany. When the business men and woman leave their offices for the evening, the down-and-outs are left behind. While Frankfurt is now far from the traditional German city, there is still heritage, beauty and culture to be found. Römer square, the hill on which Frankfurt was originally founded, was rebuilt following WWII to replicate the town square as it once was. The Main River and it's classical bridges were once the only north to south passages in Germany, and now make for impressive views of the river and surrounding city. Frankfurt has become a symbol of the modern, industrialized country in which it is situated.
